Reports emerge of US envoy proposing Italy replace Iran at World Cup

U.S. special envoy Paolo Zampolli has reportedly proposed to President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino that Italy replace Iran in the 2026 World Cup. According to the Financial Times, the suggestion aims to improve diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Italy following tensions over the conflict with Iran. Iran has officially qualified for the tournament, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. While Iran previously requested to move its group matches against Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt from the U.S. to Mexico, FIFA denied the request. FIFA has confirmed that the schedule will proceed as planned, and neither the White House, FIFA, nor the Italian Football Federation have issued official comments on the proposal. Iran’s football federation maintains that its national team is preparing normally for the event. If a withdrawal were to occur, final authority regarding team replacements rests solely with FIFA.
