EU reaches provisional agreement on social security coordination

The Council of the EU, under the Cypriot Presidency, and the European Parliament have reached a provisional agreement to update rules for coordinating national social security systems. The revision aims to simplify and modernize the framework for citizens moving within the European Union. Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Marinos Mousiouttas stated that the agreement clarifies access to social rights to encourage free movement. The agreement includes regulations concerning unemployment benefits, long-term care, and family benefits. It also addresses rules for individuals working in multiple member states or those temporarily posted abroad. Additionally, new measures have been introduced to improve cooperation and transparency between member states, aiming to prevent abuse and ensure equal treatment. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen fair labor mobility across the bloc.
