Professional footballers initiate legal action against FIFA
Approximately 3,000 professional football players have launched a collective legal initiative against FIFA, claiming potential damages of up to 8 billion euros. The dispute centers on FIFA's regulations regarding the unilateral termination of player contracts, which plaintiffs argue violate European labor freedom laws. This legal action follows the landmark ruling in favor of Lassana Diarra, who challenged FIFA regulations after his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow was terminated in 2014. The European court determined that certain FIFA provisions unfairly restricted players' ability to continue their careers. The current claimants intend to seek compensation for economic losses resulting from these disputed rules. Legal proceedings are expected to accelerate in the coming months as players attempt to challenge the governing body's control over transfer and employment regulations.
