Greek parliament lifts immunity for thirteen New Democracy deputies
The plenary session of the Greek Parliament voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of thirteen members of the New Democracy party. The decision was reached with a broad majority, supported by the entirety of the opposition parties. This action follows the submission of two case files to the parliament regarding the distribution of subsidies to producers by OPEKEPE in 2021. The deputies affected by the decision are Katerina Papakosta, Kostas Ach. Karamanlis, Giannis Kefalogiannis, Notis Mitarakis, Kostas Tsiaras, Kostas Skrekas, Dimitris Vartzopoulos, Maximos Senetakis, Lakis Vassiliadis, Christos Boukoros, Theofilos Leontaridis, Charalambos Athanasiou, and Tasos Hatzivassiliou. The removal of immunity is a procedural step required to facilitate an ongoing judicial investigation into the subsidy programs. No specific charges have been confirmed at this stage beyond the investigative proceedings. The process concluded without surprises, reflecting a consensus among the parliamentary groups.
