Public debate arises over school holiday for Archbishop Georgios' name day
A school holiday scheduled for April 23, the name day of Archbishop Georgios, has sparked renewed public debate in Cyprus. Schools at all levels remain closed on this date according to existing regulations, creating childcare challenges for many working parents. Critics argue the holiday leads to unnecessary loss of instructional time and burdens families who lack alternative childcare options during the workday. Some parents have publicly criticized educators, although teachers maintain they have no authority over the holiday and that the decision rests with the Ministry of Education. Notably, Archbishop Georgios himself requested the abolition of the holiday in 2023 to protect student learning time. While some voices, such as theologian Theodoros Kyriakou, argue the holiday should be removed to respect the diverse backgrounds of students in a multicultural society, others emphasize that it represents a traditional practice dating back to the time of Archbishop Makarios. The Holy Archdiocese maintains that the holiday's value depends on whether it is treated as an opportunity for spiritual and historical education rather than just a day off.
