Tufan Erhurman comments on UN Secretary-General's Cyprus initiative
Turkish Cypriot politician Tufan Erhurman has addressed the anticipated UN initiative regarding the Cyprus issue scheduled for after July. Erhurman, referencing his recent meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo in Antalya, clarified that this move should not be interpreted as a new formal UN plan. Instead, he described it as a signal of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's continued commitment to re-engaging with the negotiation process. Erhurman noted that the initiative is expected to gain momentum following electoral processes in the Republic of Cyprus and the conclusion of the EU presidency. Regarding the methodology of the process, he emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side maintains its firm stance on political equality, equal partnership, energy rights, and security guarantees. He argued that the majority of the Turkish Cypriot community supports a solution but warned against any attempts to bypass their established rights. The actual direction and outcome of the UN's renewed interest remain uncertain at this stage.
