Panathinaikos to part ways with manager Rafael Benitez
Panathinaikos management has decided to part ways with head coach Rafael Benitez following the conclusion of the current Super League play-offs. Benitez will remain on the bench until the final match of the season against PAOK on May 17. The decision follows a misalignment regarding the club's long-term strategy, as the coach requested the acquisition of 10-11 experienced players, while the club prefers to focus on developing young talent and limiting summer signings to 5-6 additions. Under his contract signed in October 2023, valid until 2027 with an option for an extra year, Panathinaikos is obligated to pay the coach's salary for the 2026/27 season, estimated at 3.5 million euros, plus a 1 million euro penalty fee for early contract termination. The club currently pays approximately 2.5 million euros per season to the manager and his technical team. Panathinaikos is already searching for a new coach who aligns with the club's youth development project. Both parties aim to finalize the separation smoothly to avoid further conflict.
