Turkey disputes Greek fishing maps and maritime jurisdiction in the Aegean
Former Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have formally rejected maps published by the Greek Fisheries Inspection Authority. Turkey claims these maps establish illegal fishing prohibitions and imaginary maritime boundaries in areas where Greece lacks jurisdiction. Ankara specifically objects to restrictions extending beyond the six-nautical-mile limit of Greek territorial waters, characterizing them as violations of international law. Fuat Oktay emphasized that Turkey will not tolerate unilateral actions or the creation of faits accomplis in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Conversely, Greece maintains its sovereign right to manage its maritime zones and fishing activities. The Turkish Foreign Ministry called for resolution through dialogue, citing the Athens Declaration of December 7, 2023, regarding friendly relations and good neighborliness. Turkey asserts that these Greek measures are null and void under international law.
