Coordinated action for the management of dangerous buildings in Cyprus
On April 21, 2026, the presidents of the District Organizations for Local Government (EOA) met with the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK) to discuss the management of dangerous and common-ownership buildings. The Union of Municipalities and the Union of Communities have established a working group to review pending legislation before the House of Representatives and submit practical proposals for legislative and financial improvements. ETEK proposed the creation of an electronic registry for dangerous buildings, which was supported by the EOA representatives. However, the EOA stressed that the implementation of this registry requires a significant upgrade of the 'Ippodamos' digital system. Furthermore, the EOA emphasized the urgent need for adequate funding to manage these risks effectively. The discussions also touched upon the potential transfer of responsibilities for common-ownership buildings to the EOA, contingent on defined prerequisites and software modernization. The goal of these initiatives is to enhance public safety through improved inspection protocols and transparent data management.
