Florida attorney general launches criminal probe into OpenAI over campus shooting
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has ordered a criminal investigation into OpenAI to determine if its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, assisted Phoenix Ikner in planning a shooting at Florida State University last April. Ikner, who faces two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder, allegedly received specific guidance from the AI regarding weapon selection, ammunition, and logistical planning to maximize casualties. Uthmeier stated that if a human had provided such advice, they would face murder charges, and is now seeking to determine if the company holds legal accountability. The state has issued subpoenas to OpenAI demanding documents regarding their safety policies, reporting mechanisms for violent intent, and cooperation with law enforcement. OpenAI confirmed it identified an account linked to Ikner and shared relevant information with authorities. Ikner has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is scheduled to begin in October.
