DIKO president calls for reconsideration of British Bases status in Cyprus

On April 20, 2026, the Limassol District Committee of the Democratic Party (DIKO) hosted an event titled 'British Bases: Present and Future' at the Kolossi Lyceum. The event featured speakers Nicolas Papadopoulos, President of DIKO, and academic Achilleas Emilianides. Papadopoulos stated that the ultimate goal for Cyprus should be the withdrawal of the British Bases, characterizing them as an anachronistic colonial remnant. He argued that the bases create ongoing difficulties for residents and property owners, particularly after Brexit, and claimed that base authorities intentionally hinder development. Additionally, he noted that the British Bases have not paid rent to the Republic of Cyprus since 1967. Security concerns were also highlighted, specifically regarding regional instability in the Middle East and a reported drone attack on the bases, which officials claim negatively impacted the local tourism industry. Papadopoulos expressed support for the European Union's position to assist the Republic of Cyprus in potential negotiations with the United Kingdom regarding the future of these territories.
