Farmers take to the streets again for new protests, affecting various roads
The European Left and AKEL have expressed strong concerns regarding the negative impact of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement on the Cypriot agricultural sector. MEP Giorgos Georgiou highlighted that the deal threatens food safety and the sustainability of traditional products like Halloumi against cheap imports. In response, farmers have scheduled new protest mobilizations in Nicosia for Saturday, February 14, marching toward the EU House and the Presidential Palace. During a press conference, the agreement was described as a death blow for local agriculture due to unfair competition from countries using prohibited pesticides. Furthermore, representatives noted that the deal undermines the EU's own environmental goals and the Green Deal. Georgiou urged the Cypriot government to form alliances with other affected member states to protect farming interests during EU budget negotiations.
