Cyprus deepens strategic partnerships with the United States and France
Cyprus is strengthening its strategic cooperation with the United States and France in the sectors of energy, defense, and trade. Energy Minister Michalis Damianou announced that Cypriot gas production from the Aphrodite field, managed with U.S. firms, is expected by early 2030, with future plans for export to Egypt. Following the declaration of Glaukos and Pegasos as commercial discoveries on March 30, 2026, U.S. presence remains a key economic pillar. Additionally, Cypriot exports to the U.S. doubled to 51 million euros in 2025. In the defense sector, President Nikos Christodoulides and French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) will be signed in June, facilitating a French military presence. France has reaffirmed its solidarity with Cyprus, citing European defense pacts and increased military assets in the region. President Christodoulides noted that these developments underscore the strength of bilateral ties, as France remains a permanent member of the UN Security Council supporting a resolution to the Cyprus issue.
