Femicide and suicide investigation in Heraklion, Crete
On April 24, the funeral was held for 43-year-old Eleftheria Giakoumaki, who was murdered by her former partner near the chapel of Agios Panteleimonas in Dafnes, Heraklion. Authorities determined the murder took place on Sunday, April 19, between 11:00 and 11:10, when the victim was shot in the head with a 9mm pistol while in her car. Following the crime, the 39-year-old perpetrator attempted to conceal evidence by moving the victim's body to the rear seat and abandoning the vehicle in a field near Agia Varvara. The suspect was captured on CCTV footage walking to catch a taxi and later returning to the scene in his own car to hide tracks. Evidence revealed the suspect had installed a GPS tracker on the victim's car and had a history of obsessive behavior following their split two months prior. The perpetrator later died by suicide using a shotgun near the chapel of Panagia Kardiotissa as police investigations tightened around him. His siblings confirmed they were unaware of his motives and expressed deep remorse to the victim's family, who left behind three children.
