Criminal cases filed in Koumas saga
Attorney-general George Savvides has officially filed criminal charges against one individual and two legal entities regarding irregularities within the Cyprus Football Association. The cases stem from a long-running investigation into the conduct of former CFA chairman Giorgos Koumas, who resigned from his position in June 2023. Investigators examined accusations that Koumas manipulated the distribution of television rights money from CytaVision to create unfair advantages for specific clubs. Further allegations include the granting of unauthorized bonuses and potential conflicts of interest related to matches with suspicious betting activity. The legal service confirmed that the filing follows a rigorous assessment of findings provided by the sports ethics committee and investigator Alexandra Lykourgou. While Koumas has maintained that his actions were intended for the good of the sport, the Nicosia district court will now handle the legal proceedings.
