Increased security measures for EU informal meeting in Cyprus

Cyprus is implementing strict security measures on April 23 and 24, 2026, for the informal meeting of EU heads of state and government. During this period, a total ban on the use of drones has been imposed across the entire country. The Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Center has issued NAVTEX notice NW 120/26, prohibiting navigation near the Ayia Napa Marina on April 23 from 16:00 to 23:00. Road closures will affect the Nicosia, Larnaca, and Famagusta provinces, including the Nicosia–Larnaca and Larnaca–Ayia Napa highways. Specifically, roads around the Ayia Napa Marina will close on April 23 from 16:00 to 23:00, and areas surrounding the Nicosia Conference Center will be inaccessible on April 24 from 07:30 to 18:00. The meeting, chaired by European Council President António Costa, will address the geopolitical environment and the multiannual financial framework 2028-2034. President Nikos Christodoulides will host the summit, which will also include regional Middle Eastern partners on April 24. Security protocols include aerial monitoring and specialized police deployment to ensure the safety of visiting officials.
