Cyprus implements heightened security for EU leaders' meeting

Cyprus is hosting an informal meeting of European Union heads of state on April 23 and 24, 2026, under the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. These measures include intermittent road closures on major highways and urban networks, specifically affecting Agia Thekla Avenue in Ayia Napa on April 23 from 16:00 to 23:00, and Aglantzia Avenue in Nicosia on April 24 from 07:30 to 18:00. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre has issued NAVTEX NW 120/26, prohibiting maritime navigation around the Ayia Napa marina during the specified hours on April 23. Additionally, a ministerial decree has enforced a nationwide ban on drone usage throughout the two-day period. Police have advised the public to comply with traffic regulations and follow officer instructions to ensure the safety of the visiting dignitaries.
