Cyprus hosts informal European Council summit
Cyprus is hosting an informal European Council summit in Ayia Napa and Nicosia, marking the first time the island holds such a high-level EU event. Key attendees include EU heads of state, European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. The agenda covers geopolitical developments in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and energy crisis mitigation via the AccelerateEU programme. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to participate. Additionally, the summit addresses the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034 and the potential activation of the Article 42.7 mutual defense clause. Regional partners from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Gulf Cooperation Council were invited to attend a working lunch. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stoker will be absent from the proceedings. The summit activities begin with a welcoming ceremony at Ayia Napa Marina and conclude with sessions at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia.
