Cyprus hosts first informal European Council summit

On April 23 and 24, 2026, Cyprus is hosting an informal European Council summit for the first time since its accession to the EU in 2004. President Nicos Christodoulides is presiding over the event, which begins on Thursday at the Ayia Napa Marina and continues on Friday at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia. The agenda focuses on regional geopolitical developments, specifically the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, alongside the EU's Multi-annual Financial Framework for 2028–2034. A key point of discussion is the operational plan for the potential activation of the EU mutual defense clause, Article 42(7). European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to present the 'AccelerateEU' package, aimed at addressing the energy crisis and managing fuel costs. Furthermore, leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Gulf Cooperation Council have been invited to discuss strategic regional relations. French President Emmanuel Macron is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks during his visit to the country.
