Cyprus hosts first informal European Council meeting since 2004

President Nicos Christodoulides is hosting an informal European Council meeting in Cyprus this Thursday and Friday. This marks the first time Cyprus has hosted such a summit since joining the European Union in 2004. Key agenda items include regional developments and their broader implications. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to present a package of measures to combat the energy crisis and rising costs. For the first time in an EU summit, leaders will discuss the operational plan for the activation of Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union. Additionally, the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034 will be addressed to provide political direction for future negotiations. President Christodoulides also announced plans for side meetings with leaders from Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon to discuss strategic cooperation. Separately, the Cypriot Cabinet has approved the provision of medical aid to Lebanon.
