Cyprus seeks candidates for Advocate General position at the Court of Justice of the EU

The Republic of Cyprus has initiated a selection process for the position of Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) following the resignation of Aemilios. The appointee will serve the remainder of the current term, which concludes on October 6, 2027. The CJEU, based in Luxembourg, consists of 27 judges and 11 Advocates General. Candidates must meet the requirements of Article 253 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, specifically possessing independence and qualifications for high judicial office or recognized legal expertise. The appointment requires a common agreement by member state governments following consultation with an Article 255 advisory panel. In Cyprus, the candidate selection is overseen by a special committee established by Council of Ministers decision 42.656.A, as amended. This committee is chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and includes the Attorney General of the Republic, the President of the Supreme Court, or the President of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
