ETSC report on cycling safety in Europe and Cyprus
The European Transport Safety Council published the 'PIN Flash 50' report on Tuesday, highlighting trends in cycling safety. In Cyprus, serious cyclist injuries decreased by an average of 7 percent annually between 2014 and 2024, the largest reduction among examined countries. Between 2022 and 2024, cyclists accounted for 5 percent of road deaths in Cyprus, compared to an EU average of 10 percent. Across the EU, 1,926 cyclists died in 2024, with total cyclist fatalities falling by only 8 percent over the last decade, an average of 0.5 percent annually. Conversely, fatalities among motorized road users dropped by 2 percent annually during the same period. Meanwhile, serious cyclist injuries across the EU increased by 12 percent, though the report notes that hospital data suggests police records capture less than 10 percent of incidents. Analysis indicates that 65 percent of cyclist deaths are caused by collisions with motorized vehicles, primarily passenger cars.
