Government priorities for 2026: actions planned for politics, economy, and defense
President Nikos Christodoulides has unveiled the government's program for 2026, which features five core priorities and over 55 specific initiatives. Cyprus intends to strengthen its Western orientation and institutional presence in Brussels during its upcoming EU Council presidency. Significant energy milestones include signing an agreement with Israel for the Aphrodite gas field and initiating exports from the Kronos field to the European market. The national defense strategy focuses on modernizing military bases and upgrading equipment through European programs and strategic cooperation with the United States. Additionally, the government plans to tighten migration policies for offenders while simultaneously implementing a comprehensive integration strategy for legal residents. To combat climate change effects, new desalination plants will be commissioned to significantly increase the daily water supply.
