US Congressional event marks Greek Independence Day
On April 21, 2026, members of the U.S. Congress and ambassadors from Greece and Cyprus gathered at the Capitol for an annual parliamentary event marking the 205th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821. The event was organized by the American Hellenic Institute in cooperation with the Congressional Hellenic Caucus. Lawmakers noted that this year's anniversary coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence. Representative Chris Pappas, co-chair of the Hellenic Caucus, emphasized the importance of energy, military, and economic cooperation with Greece and Cyprus. Pappas described the caucus as a bipartisan effort aimed at countering Turkish influence. Representative Dina Titus of Nevada echoed these sentiments, labeling Turkey as an unreliable ally while highlighting Greece's role as a strategic partner alongside Cyprus and Israel. Cyprus Ambassador Evangelos Savvas stressed the need for regional stability, citing the commitment of Greece and Cyprus to the rule of law and human rights in a challenging geopolitical environment.
