UN Security Council condemns deadly attack on peacekeeper in Lebanon
On April 18, a French peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed and three others were injured during an attack. According to reports, the patrol was targeted by non-state actors while investigating suspected explosives. The Security Council members expressed their condolences to the victims' families and reaffirmed their support for the UNIFIL mission. They urged all parties to respect the security of UN personnel and ensure their freedom of movement in accordance with international law. The Council also referenced previous resolutions 2518 and 2589, requesting a prompt investigation by the UN into the circumstances of the attack. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also issued a condemnation of the violence, emphasizing the necessity of protecting international personnel.
