Development plans for Athalassa Hospital upgrade
The State Health Services Organization (OKYpY) has signed a contract for a feasibility study regarding the second and third phases of the Athalassa Hospital modernization project. The study is expected to be completed within three months and subsequently submitted to the Ministry of Finance for final approval. If the process proceeds as planned, the tender for the construction phases will be announced by the autumn. The second phase focuses on replacing old, unsuitable structures, while the third phase aims to complete the mental health facility's modernization. A structural integrity report released earlier this year highlighted that existing buildings were unsafe for patients and staff, leading to public protests by medical unions. On January 26, the Minister of Health convened a meeting that resulted in the immediate relocation of patients from the most dangerous wards. Concurrently, a separate facility is scheduled to open within two months to address ongoing overcrowding issues at the hospital.
