EU transport ministers hold emergency meeting on fuel supply security

On Tuesday morning, European Union transport ministers held an emergency virtual meeting chaired by the Cypriot Presidency to address potential fuel supply disruptions caused by the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Cyprus Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeadis emphasized the need for EU-wide coordination to prevent panic and ensure energy security in the transport sector, noting that there is currently no critical shortage of aviation fuel. European Commissioner for Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas announced that the European Commission will present a new energy plan, 'Accelerate EU', this Wednesday. The meeting focused on maintaining transport connectivity and avoiding uncoordinated national responses. Officials stressed the importance of long-term demand management and resilience against geopolitical instability. While acknowledging that there are no immediate shortages, the discussions aimed to prepare for potential short-term volatility and develop practical policy measures ahead of upcoming leader meetings.
