FIDE candidates tournament 2026 concludes in Cyprus
The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 concluded with a closing ceremony at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Peyia, Paphos, Cyprus. The event served as the final stage to determine the challengers for the upcoming World Chess Championship. Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan and Vaishali Rameshbabu of India emerged as the winners, earning the right to compete for the world title against the reigning champions. The ceremony included a pre-recorded address from the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, who acknowledged the importance of hosting the tournament. FIDE Deputy President Viswanathan Anand delivered a speech addressing the generational shift occurring in competitive chess. Additionally, a video message from the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, was presented to the audience. The event organizers highlighted the tournament as a historic milestone for chess development. All participants were awarded medals and trophies for their performance throughout the competition.
