Electricity authority of Cyprus employees hold 24-hour strike

On Thursday, April 23, 2026, employees of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) initiated a 24-hour nationwide strike. The industrial action follows an unproductive meeting between trade unions and Energy Minister Michael Damianos, during which the unions expressed dissatisfaction with the government's approach to electricity cost, supply security, and energy strategy. Union representatives, including Kyriakos Tafounas of EPOPAH and Marios Papoutis of SEPAIK, warned that further measures may follow if their concerns are not addressed. The EAC confirmed that administrative offices and customer service centers would be closed for the day. However, management assured the public that essential infrastructure will continue to operate through skeleton staff to prevent power outages. The EAC encouraged consumers to utilize online payment methods and electronic mail for urgent service requests during the strike. Officials noted that approximately 2,500 employees work across regional offices, technical centers, and power stations in Vasiliko, Moni, and Dhekelia.
