ASTEPAHK union opposes upcoming electricity authority strike
The ASTEPAHK union has officially declared its opposition to a 24-hour strike scheduled for Thursday, 23 April, by four other unions at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). The unions organizing the strike are EPOPAI, SIDIKEK-PEO, SEPAIK, and SYVAIK. ASTEPAHK stated that the timing for industrial action is inappropriate and argues that such measures could produce counterproductive results. The union expressed concerns that the strike might inadvertently provide arguments for those aiming to close down the EAC. Furthermore, ASTEPAHK claims that unresolved energy sector issues have persisted for over 15 years, citing a failure by the EAC and external bodies to modernize the organization effectively. The union also criticized the EAC for not clearly addressing the risks to the grid posed by integrating renewable energy sources without adequate infrastructure. ASTEPAHK concluded that energy storage solutions should have been prioritized alongside renewable licensing to ensure stability. Consequently, the union will not participate in the strike to prioritize the interests of consumers.
