Regional authorities conduct inspections of hazardous buildings across Cyprus

Local government organizations in Larnaca and Nicosia have intensified inspections of hazardous buildings to ensure public safety. In Athienou, Mayor Kyriakos Kareklas identified nine dangerous buildings, with one additional site in Avdellero, noting that these properties are privately owned by Greek Cypriots and require planning permits for potential demolition or repair. Concurrently, a six-member technical team from the Larnaca District Local Government Organization (EOA) and the Municipality of Larnaca began inspections on April 20 of 15 to 20 high-risk structures within Larnaca city. In Nicosia, the EOA reported 1,466 hazardous buildings within the walled city, including 268 added since April 2025. Constantinos Giorkatzis, president of the Nicosia EOA, highlighted challenges regarding the enforcement of legislation and the procedural delays in accessing a 2-million-euro government fund allocated for maintenance and support. Officials emphasize that primary responsibility for structural maintenance remains with property owners.
