Local government organizations conduct safety inspections of buildings in Larnaca and Nicosia
Authorities in Larnaca and Nicosia have launched initiatives to inspect buildings deemed hazardous. In Larnaca, a six-member team from the District Local Government Organization and the municipality began operations on April 20 to evaluate 15 to 20 high-risk structures and identify additional dangerous buildings. Meanwhile, in Nicosia, the District Local Government Organization is inspecting 1,466 hazardous structures, focusing on 200 buildings in the Omirie area. Since April 2025, Nicosia has recorded an increase of 268 dangerous buildings on top of an existing inventory of 1,198. Of these, four require immediate evacuation, while others need maintenance. Nicosia officials report that 150,000 euros of a proposed 2 million euro national fund have been utilized, though procedures for accessing the remaining funds remain unclear. The responsibility for maintenance lies primarily with property owners, with efforts ongoing to enforce relevant safety legislation.
