Cyprus government seeks FBI assistance in Sandy case

The investigations, which concern allegations made by journalist Makarios Drousiotis against high-ranking political, judicial, and financial figures, are reportedly at an advanced stage. The FBI team is expected to arrive in Cyprus in the coming days to assist in the analysis of testimonies and statements. Parallel to this, the Cyprus Police continues its cooperation with Europol regarding forensic examinations. President Christodoulides stated that the FBI's specialized expertise will help expedite the investigative process. Journalist Makarios Drousiotis criticized the government's decision, arguing that it reflects a failure to trust local authorities and calling for the appointment of independent criminal investigators within Cyprus. Drousiotis expressed concerns that the FBI lack local context and investigation powers, claiming that this move might be an attempt to circumvent a domestic investigation. The government has maintained that it is strengthening institutional procedures to ensure accountability.
