Theron explained that her mother shot and killed her father in self-defense at their home in South Africa. The actress described how her father, who was in an agitated state, returned home after the family visited her uncle's house. According to Theron, the conflict began because her father was angry that she did not greet him properly upon their arrival. Seeking to avoid a confrontation, Theron had hidden in her room while her father entered the residence. Fearing for their safety, her mother eventually shot him. Theron stated that the action was a necessary response to the imminent danger they faced at the time.
