Escalating drone strikes between Russia and Ukraine result in multiple civilian casualties
Recent intensified drone campaigns by both Russia and Ukraine have led to numerous civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. In Russia, drone strikes targeted oil refineries in Tuapse, the Apatit fertilizer plant in Cherepovets, and caused damage in Sevastopol, Samara, and the Vologda region, resulting in at least several deaths and multiple injuries. Russian officials reported the interception of over 250 drones across twelve regions. Simultaneously, Russia conducted sustained aerial bombardments across Ukraine, killing civilians in Odesa, Dnipro, Kherson, and the Sumy region. At the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Russian authorities reported the death of a transport worker due to a Ukrainian drone strike, while both sides continue to trade accusations regarding nuclear safety. Diplomatic efforts remain largely stalled as conflict continues to expand, and the EU recently approved a significant loan to assist Ukraine. International observers and humanitarian agencies have documented the high toll on civilians since the conflict began in 2022.
