Energy Minister discusses power grid issues and trade union concerns

On April 22, 2026, Minister of Energy Michalis Damianou held meetings with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) board and trade unions to address grid stability, photovoltaics, and the Vassilikos gas project. The Minister defended the necessity of photovoltaic energy cuts, managed by the Transmission System Operator (TSO), to maintain grid stability. He stated that these cuts are an EU-wide phenomenon and not unique to Cyprus. Regarding the EAC, the Minister identified long-standing structural issues that require time to resolve. He emphasized that the government's primary goal is energy security, with cost reductions expected in the mid-term through energy storage and renewable energy integration. The Minister clarified that he would not intervene in labor disputes, as those are the responsibility of the EAC board. Trade unions expressed disappointment with the meeting, while the Minister maintained that they are working towards shared goals within legal frameworks, specifically noting that requested funding for Dhekelia could constitute illegal state aid. A planned work stoppage by trade unions was scheduled for April 23.
