Mayor of Lefkara warns of dangerous buildings after fatal collapse

Sophocles Sophocleous, the Mayor of Lefkara, reported that hundreds of buildings in the Lefkara municipality are currently in a dangerous state. This includes heritage sites, Turkish Cypriot properties, and buildings abandoned by owners living abroad. The statement follows the tragic death of two individuals due to a building collapse in Limassol on Holy Saturday. The mayor expressed frustration regarding the lack of government action, noting that he has repeatedly raised these concerns with the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Transport, and the Department of Town Planning. Despite presenting photographic evidence and proposals for stricter legal measures, he claims that the issue remains unresolved. Sophocleous has requested that the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization (EOA) conduct a comprehensive inspection of all buildings in the city and district. He also called for the public disclosure of all granted planning permits. Similar requests were made 20 days ago during a meeting attended by the president of the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK) and the president of the EOA, yet he stated that no such actions have been implemented.
