UK and France lead international talks on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz

On Friday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron co-chaired a video conference with representatives from dozens of countries to discuss maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting focused on establishing long-term measures for free navigation and supporting mine-clearing operations once security conditions allow. Participants emphasized the necessity of maintaining the current ceasefire and ensuring the safety of merchant vessels and sailors. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) was represented at the discussions. While no binding decisions were finalized, the UK and France are advocating for a multinational defensive mission to be deployed after the cessation of hostilities. More than 12 countries have expressed a willingness to contribute to this effort, although the specific structure and command of the mission remain undecided. The consultations aim to restore regional stability and protect commercial shipping.
