Unauthorized agricultural activity in the Avlona buffer zone
On Sunday, April 19, 2026, around 11:00 am, a Turkish farmer entered the United Nations-controlled buffer zone in the village of Avlona using a tractor and a mower. The individual attempted to cut hay in an area officially designated by the UN as a “frozen zone,” where all agricultural activity is strictly prohibited. According to the community leader of Avlona, Menelaos Savva, the area is restricted regardless of legal land ownership status. Reports differ regarding the property rights, with some sources claiming the land belongs to a Greek Cypriot, while others state the farmer is the legal owner of the specific plots. UNFICYP peacekeepers intervened at the scene, negotiated with the man for approximately one hour, and successfully removed him from the area. Local officials noted that this is a recurring issue, as several individuals frequently attempt to enter the restricted zone for cultivation. The community leader has previously requested that UN authorities move patrol routes to better prevent such unauthorized access.
