Diplomatic protest over UN meeting with Turkish Cypriot official

The government of Cyprus has filed formal protests with the United Nations in New York and Nicosia following a meeting between UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo and Tufan Erhurman. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey. Controversy arose after photographs showed the flag of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus displayed alongside the United Nations flag. The Cypriot government and political parties, including DIKO and DEPA, characterized the display as a violation of UN resolutions and argued it could be interpreted as an indirect recognition of the de facto entity. The UN standard practice typically involves displaying the UN flag only alongside those of recognized member states. Tufan Erhurman's office described the discussion as productive, focusing on confidence-building measures and the Cyprus issue. This event marks the first meeting between the two officials since Erhurman assumed his role in October. The protests emphasize the sensitivity regarding symbols that may undermine the legality of the Republic of Cyprus.
