Delays and controversy persist at the Liopetri River redevelopment project

The redevelopment project at the Liopetri River has remained an active construction site for six years, significantly exceeding its original March 2023 completion deadline. In November 2024, the Ministry of Interior terminated the contracts of both the original contractor and the project engineer due to repeated delays. Liopetri Deputy Mayor Markos Koumis stated that the project is currently in the quay wall construction phase, with ongoing slow progress. While a contract target exists for December, informal timelines for the fishing community have shifted from May to October 2026. Local fishermen report that the project design is impractical and complicates their professional activities, leading many to relocate to other shelters. The project is being executed in stages, with only the road network completed in July 2025.
