Lawyer and woman arrested in Thessaloniki over infant trafficking allegations

A 48-year-old lawyer and a 20-year-old woman were arrested in Thessaloniki following an investigation by the Greek Police triggered by a hospital employee's report. The investigation suggests the two individuals entered into a civil partnership in March 2024 to facilitate the registration of the woman's newborn child as their own. The child was born on April 14, 2024, and the civil partnership was dissolved the following day. Upon discharge from the clinic on Friday, the suspects left in separate vehicles, with the 48-year-old transporting the infant alongside a hired nanny. Prosecutors have filed felony charges against the pair for human trafficking, disruption of family order, and obtaining a false statement. Both suspects remain in custody awaiting their testimony before the investigator.
