French UNIFIL soldier killed in ambush in southern Lebanon
On Saturday, April 18, French UNIFIL sergeant Florian Montorio was killed and three other soldiers were injured during an ambush in southern Lebanon. The personnel were conducting a mission to clear a road toward a UNIFIL position that had been blocked by recent fighting. According to French Minister of the Armed Forces Catherine Vautrain, the unit was attacked at close range by direct small-arms fire. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that all evidence points toward Hezbollah's responsibility for the attack. In response, the Lebanese government condemned the incident and promised to apprehend those responsible. France has demanded that Lebanese authorities take immediate action to arrest the perpetrators and ensure the security of international peacekeeping forces. The incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of UN personnel and may carry significant geopolitical consequences for the region, including potential diplomatic pressure on Hezbollah.
