Illegal Use of Fireworks: Criminal Liability for Newlyweds and Parents at Christenings – Monetary Penalty Increased Tenfold – What Powers are Granted to the Chief of Police

The Cypriot Parliament passed a law to strengthen regulations against the illegal use of fireworks with 33 votes in favor and 2 abstentions. The "Explosives (Amendment) Law of 2026" aims to clarify the responsibilities between the Mines and Quarries Service and the Cyprus Police. This aims to enhance compliance checks regarding the storage and use of explosives and stricter rules for illegal fireworks. The law clarifies that responsibility for illegal fireworks use can extend to couples at weddings or parents at baptisms and venue owners/managers. Fines are increased tenfold.
