Cyprus pledges 850,000 euros for humanitarian aid to Sudan and neighboring countries
At the Third International Humanitarian Conference on Sudan held in Berlin in April 2026, the Cypriot government through CyprusAid pledged at least 850,000 euros in humanitarian assistance for 2026. This funding is part of a broader international response involving the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the African Union, which saw total pledges exceed 811 million to 1.5 billion euros depending on the report. The aid is intended to support vulnerable populations affected by the civil war that began in April 2023, with a specific focus on women and children. The assistance will be distributed across Sudan and twelve neighboring nations including South Sudan, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Eritrea, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Egypt. Funds are allocated through UNICEF, the UNHCR, and the UN OCHA. Since the conflict's inception, estimates suggest approximately 400,000 deaths and 25 million people suffering from famine, with roughly nine million internally displaced. The conference highlighted the urgent need to alleviate suffering in what is described as one of the world's fastest-growing humanitarian crises.
