U.N. Women report details high female mortality in Gaza conflict

A report by U.N. Women states that 47 women and girls were killed on average per day in Gaza between October 2023 and December 2025, totaling over 38,000 deaths. Sofia Calltorp, the agency’s humanitarian action head, noted that the proportion of female deaths is significantly higher than in previous conflicts. Following an October ceasefire that ended two years of full-scale war, approximately 750 Palestinians have been reported killed by local medics, while four Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants. UNICEF reported that at least 214 children have died in the region during the last six months. Approximately one million women and girls remain displaced in Gaza. Israel currently maintains control over more than half of the territory, while Hamas governs the remaining coastal strip. Both sides accuse each other of violating the ongoing ceasefire. The U.N. expressed concern regarding the lack of gender-aggregated data since the ceasefire began, noting that fatalities continue despite the cessation of full-scale hostilities.
