UN reports on high civilian casualties in Gaza from October 2023 to December 2025
A report by UN Women states that over 38,000 women and girls were killed in the Gaza Strip between October 2023 and December 2025, with an average of 47 deaths per day. UNICEF reported that at least 214 children have been killed in the last six months alone. Approximately one million women and girls remain displaced, while the World Health Organization notes that over 500,000 women lack access to basic essential services. Since an October 2025 ceasefire ended two years of active conflict, local health authorities report 750 additional Palestinian deaths and four Israeli soldier fatalities. Israel currently maintains control over more than half of the Gaza Strip, while Hamas governs the remaining area. UN Women humanitarian official Sofia Kalthorp noted that casualty rates for women and children in this conflict exceed those of previous hostilities. Israel and Hamas continue to trade accusations regarding breaches of the ceasefire agreement. The exact death toll following the ceasefire remains difficult to verify due to incomplete data.
