Wizz Air reports temporary jet fuel shortages in Italy
Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi announced that the airline experienced short-term jet fuel supply issues at three Italian airports: Venice, Brindisi, and Catania. The disruptions occurred earlier this month following fuel restrictions imposed by several Italian airports. Varadi confirmed that all fuel supply issues were resolved within hours or a single day, and no flights were cancelled as a result. The shortages are linked to concerns over global fuel supplies caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz amid the conflict in Iran. Europe typically imports 50 percent of its aviation fuel from Gulf nations, raising concerns about potential supply risks during the peak summer travel season. Wizz Air stated that it has not encountered similar problems in other European countries so far. The airline continues to monitor the situation alongside other industry players to assess the severity of potential future risks. Overall, Varadi characterized the European fuel supply as currently sufficient, despite the isolated incident in Italy.
