Cyprus respiratory health risks due to increased dust concentrations

Dr. Charis Armeftis, President of the Cyprus Respiratory Society, stated on Friday that frequent dust incidents constitute a significant public health issue. These dust episodes, exacerbated by Cyprus's geographical location and climate change, contain toxic PM10 and PM2.5 microparticles. These fine particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory system and enter the bloodstream, potentially causing oxidative stress and inflammation. Vulnerable groups, including patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular conditions, face the highest risks. Furthermore, the dust acts as a carrier for bacteria and microbes, creating a harmful mixture in the atmosphere. Dr. Armeftis argues that existing public misconceptions about the safety of dust must be corrected, and he advocates for the establishment of specific legislative measures to address air quality. The public is advised to limit unnecessary movement and exposure during days with high concentrations. Specialists emphasize that these air quality events are becoming increasingly frequent, necessitating systematic monitoring and protective action.
