Forest fires caused by lightning strikes in Karvounas and Evrychou
On Friday, April 17, 2026, two forest fires broke out in Cyprus due to lightning strikes. The first incident occurred at 10:25 in the Karvounas area and was brought under full control by 10:40. This fire was detected by a passerby, and 13 members of the Department of Forests intervened with two fire engines. The second fire started at 10:50 in the Lachani area of the Evrychou community and was contained by 11:00. This site was identified by a Department of Forests tractor driver working nearby. Five staff members with one fire engine were deployed to extinguish the second blaze. The Department of Forests confirmed that both fires were prevented from spreading and no further damages were reported.
